Frei nach Mondrian

Each painting in the Free-after-Mondrian series by Jos Verheugen is a unique piece of art based on a existing abstract composition by Piet Mondrian with a figurative wink in the form of an animal which feels at home in the painting, both colorwise and by its natural behaviour. The animals are depicted extremely naturalistic and vividly in oil paint with a layer-upon-layer technique. The white frames are manufactured by the artist himself according to the frames that also Mondrian made himself some 100 years ago. Size 37 x 37 cm including frame.
Like his famous predecessor Piet Mondrian, Jos Verheugen has Dutch roots. However, unlike Mondrian, his artwork is purely figurative. In his series "Free after Mondrian" ("librement d’après Mondrian") Verheugen transforms the abstract compositions of his compatriot by adding a figurative element, animals in particular. The animals create a third dimension, a space, in Mondrian’s painting which is flat, without volume, before this addition. Verheugen noticed that for each of Mondrian’s geometrical compositions, one could find animal species that feel perfectly at home inside, by symbiosis of their colours or their behaviour in their natural habitat, for example. Furthermore, the animals provide an interpretation of the painting: chameleons speak about colours, frogs show that a rectangle is a surface which can serve as a support or, on the contrary, an opening through which it can penetrate, the snake’s crawling movement guide the spectators view through the grid formed by Mondrian’s lines, and the koala’s … and the parrots… etcetera, etcetera. Besides the animals, Verheugen also introduced rounded feminine forms to disrupt Mondrian’s rectilinear austerity. Or, from the perspective of his models, Verheugen projected Mondrian’s abstraction onto the inclinations of their bodies.
