Description
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918)
A member of the Austrian Sezession, a pioneer of contemporary art with an irresistible decorative Jugendstil.
Emilie Flöge (1902)
Thisportrait of Klimt’s good frien Emilie, his sisiter in law’s sister, is now much appreciated but was considered a provocative and modernistic painting in its time. Being a menber of ‘Sezession’, a grop which was involved with all the aspects of decorative art, Klimt was fascinated by the succesful haute couture studio, run by the Flöge sisters in Vienna. The painting shows a sensitively decorated garment, inspired by highly decorative Japanese stencils and Byzantine mosaics.
